FOUNDER

Kurt Robertson has always been driven by a deep creative instinct and a strong connection to nature. Although his path wasn’t always clearly defined, he remained anchored by close family, enduring faith, and a steady curiosity about the world around him. Growing up in the Australian countryside shaped both his character and his creative perspective. Early experiences with wildlife and the land including riding thoroughbreds to working with some of Australia’s most recognised zoos, formed a lasting respect for the natural world that continues to inspire his work.

His approach combines careful craftsmanship with bold expression, resulting in a style that feels both contemporary and enduring. Through ROBERTSONKUR, this foundation continues to shape art that responds to space, landscape and the values that have defined his life.

INSTINCT

Kurt established his first studio in 2011, laying the foundation for ROBERTSONKUR. What began as a small independent practice steadily gained recognition across Sydney and, over time, throughout Australia. Growth came through consistency and refining our processes, developing material language, and building relationships with collectors who connected with the work.

In 2017, the Peony Collection marked a defining chapter for the studio. The form became a lasting motif that continues to evolve across painting, sculpture and spatial works. By 2022, the studio began working with international clients, expanding its reach while maintaining the same hands‑on craftsmanship and commitment to material.

Today, ROBERTSONKUR remains an independent studio shaped by discipline, continuity and steady growth.

VISION

Within ROBERTSONKUR studio, we work across linen, canvas and sculptural forms, layering synthetic polymer and oil with a strong focus on material and structure. Our practice draws from architecture, interior space and the natural world, allowing each piece to sit in dialogue with its environment.

The Peony Collection reflects this approach not simply as a floral motif, but as a recurring form explored through surface, sculpture and object. The intention is not just visual impact, but presence. Each work is created to engage space fully and invite people to experience art not only as something seen, but something felt, grounded in nature, material and faith.

ARTISTRY

From the moment he first experienced the magic of Walt Disney's "The Lion King" at age 9, Kurt Robertson's love for movies, film, and theatre was ignited. This early encounter set the course for a lifelong appreciation of the power of creative expression through these vibrant art forms. Whether it's the stirring score of a blockbuster film, the emotive performances in a theater production, or the captivating storytelling in cinema, Kurt finds deep inspiration and connection. His passion extends beyond mere enjoyment, influencing his own artistic endeavors and his profound love for worship and music. Through film and theatre, Kurt embraces the shared human experiences and emotions conveyed, enhancing his own creative expression and fostering a unique connection with audiences around the world.

CURIOSITY

Curiosity sits at the core of ROBERTSONKUR. Founder Kurt Robertson sees it as essential to the creative process and the starting point for every idea and new direction. Through curiosity, familiar boundaries are questioned and new possibilities begin to take shape.

This mindset allows us to venture beyond the familiar, encouraging a continuous search for refinement, innovation and deeper understanding in every stroke and structure. At ROBERTSONKUR, curiosity is not about chasing trends but about staying open and allowing ideas the space to develop, evolve and become something previously unseen.

FAITH

At the core of Kurt Robertson's life and work is his profound faith in Christ. This deep spiritual connection shapes every aspect of his artistry, drawing inspiration from the beauty and intricacy of God's creation. Through his time at Hillsong College and beyond, worship has been both a sanctuary and a source of creative energy for Kurt. His experiences in and out of church have not only strengthened his faith but have infused his work with a sense of divine purpose. Each piece crafted at ROBERTSONKUR is a testament to this spiritual journey, reflecting a commitment to embodying the grace and vibrancy of the Holy Spirit. Through his art, Kurt aims to offer a glimpse of the deep loving relationship others can have with Jesus, fostering a space for reflection, inspiration, and deeper connection with the divine.

avant-garde

In the realm of art and design, ROBERTSONKUR approaches creativity with a willingness to question convention and explore beyond expected boundaries. There is often a stereotype of masculinity as purely rugged and practical, and while working with one’s hands is part of the story, there is also space for sensitivity, refinement and artistic depth. The studio embraces both strength and softness, structure and bloom.

Under the direction of Kurt Robertson, the work moves beyond surface decoration toward thoughtful spatial transformation. Ordinary materials are handled with care and intention, allowing spaces to shift subtly through texture, form and light. The aim is not spectacle, but atmosphere.

Whether interpreting botanical forms or reworking traditional elements in a contemporary way, each piece is created to sit naturally within its environment. The focus is on making work that holds presence, invites reflection and quietly reshapes the way a space is experienced.

Thoroughbred Legacy

In the early dawn, when the world is quiet and mist lingers over the earth, the thunderous power and graceful beauty of thoroughbred horses come alive. Kurt spent his early years riding and training these majestic creatures and their presence left a lasting mark on him. These beautiful animals have also deeply influenced the spirit and ethos of ROBERTSONKUR, reflecting a balance of power and refinement that runs through the studio’s work.

Inspired by their raw power and grace, the studio’s logo and brand identity pay tribute to the horse. As rider and horse move in unity, Kurt’s work brings together bold form and careful precision. The thoroughbred remains a reference point : art shaped by movement, strength and controlled elegance, just as beautiful as a thoroughbred in full stride.

WILD INSPIRATION

From childhood, surrounded by pets, to later working closely with extraordinary wildlife, Kurt Robertson’s connection to animals has been lifelong. Hands‑on experience with exotic and intelligent species, from tigers and spider monkeys to early morning elephant walks at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, deepened his respect for the natural world and shaped his creative perspective.

Time spent alongside animals as varied as rhinos and native marsupials, through zoology and wildlife conservation fostered a strong awareness of the balance and interconnection within nature. This influence is evident in his work at ROBERTSONKUR, where forms, textures and movement often reflect lessons drawn from the wild. Each piece is grounded in respect for creation and a considered appreciation of the life it represents.
