Into the beyond
|
Among the earliest works to enter the ROBERTSONKUR archives is Beyond, a two-piece canvas that occupies a quiet but significant place in the studio’s history. Created in the formative period of Kurt Robertson’s practice, the work predates the official emergence of the Peony Garden Collection, yet it holds a defining distinction: it was the first canvas artwork ever acquired from ROBERTSONKUR. Presented as a dual composition, the two canvases sit side by side in deliberate orientation, forming a single visual conversation across two surfaces. This structure marks the first dual artwork within the ROBERTSONKUR archives, introducing an early exploration of dialogue between forms, space, and balance. The style itself stands apart from later developments within the collection, reflecting an experimental moment when the language of the studio was still being discovered. While not formally part of the Peony Garden Collection, Beyond carries a foundational importance. It represents the moment when a private collector first recognised the potential of the work and placed it into a permanent home. In many ways, the piece stands as the quiet beginning of what would follow. Within the ROBERTSONKUR archive, Beyond is remembered as a starting point, the first step toward what, at the time, may have seemed impossible, but would eventually unfold into the growing garden of works that define the studio today. |
