Article: The Original Peony

The Original Peony
|
The Original Peony was the first work of the Peony Garden series, completed in 2017. The work is held in a private collection associated with founder Kurt Robertson and remains closely retained within the studio’s primary body of reference works, forming a foundational point in the development of the Peony language. The composition established the core visual system of the series: the peony as structure rather than depiction. Built through layered surface application and controlled gesture, the work introduced the signature ink movement that would come to define the broader series, where fluid marks are directed across the surface to create rhythm, tension, and spatial depth. These early ink formations became a defining structural device within ROBERTSONKUR practice, evolving from initial surface experimentation into a consistent visual language. They form the basis for later works in which movement, density, and restraint are held in balance. |
