Where The Garden Begins
|
Where The Garden Begins (Waar Die Tuin Begin) is the most personal and spatially ambitious work the studio has undertaken to date. Completed in 2026 as part of a larger private commission for a collector in the Cape Winelands, South Africa, the work marks a significant expansion of the Peony Garden series, moving the language of the studio beyond the canvas and into full architectural scale. The work does not depict a garden. It proposes one. Conceived for a specific space and a specific life, it carries the foundational visual language of the series, layered surface, controlled gesture, ink movement held in tension, while extending that language into something larger than any single work before it had attempted. Its title is deliberate. Not the garden but the beginning of one. A threshold rather than a destination. It signals quietly that what ROBERTSONKUR is building extends beyond any single room, any single collection, any single work, toward a world still unfolding. That this work found its home in South Africa is not incidental. Charisse, Kurt’s wife, was born there. A studio born in Australia, a collector rooted in the Cape, and a life built between two countries, meeting in a single work. It is the beginning of a collection with deep personal roots in South African soil. This is where that world starts. Held in a private collection, Cape Winelands, South Africa. 2026. |
